EMPLOYMENT DETAILS
• Full-time
• Senior-level engineering role
• Onsite manufacturing and engineering environment
• Focused on mission-critical electrical infrastructure and power distribution equipment
ROLE OVERVIEW
A growing manufacturer of mission-critical power distribution equipment is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the mechanical design and development of complex electrical equipment used in data center and industrial environments.

This role combines advanced mechanical design, technical project leadership, manufacturing support, and mentorship. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will work closely with Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and external suppliers to develop reliable, manufacturable, and serviceable mechanical solutions.

The ideal candidate brings significant experience designing engineered-to-order industrial products, with direct experience supporting low-voltage switchgear, switchboards, or similar electrical distribution equipment.

This position is well suited for an experienced engineer who enjoys owning designs from concept through production release, solving complex manufacturing challenges, mentoring other engineers, and helping establish scalable engineering standards within a growing operation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead the mechanical design and development of low-voltage switchgear, switchboards, and related electrical distribution assemblies.

• Design enclosures, structural frames, barriers, mounting systems, cable-management features, lifting provisions, ventilation systems, and service-access components.

• Develop detailed 3D models, assemblies, and production drawings using SolidWorks.

• Create and maintain complete manufacturing documentation packages, including bills of materials, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and revision-controlled engineering records.

• Support large multi-section equipment configurations, shipping splits, installation interfaces, alignment, accessibility, and serviceability.

• Design mechanical solutions for high-current electrical distribution systems, including equipment in the approximately 1200A–6000A range.

• Collaborate with Electrical Engineering to ensure mechanical layouts properly support bus systems, breakers, cable entry, metering, clearances, safety, and electrical functionality.

• Lead Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly activities to improve manufacturability, quality, consistency, and production efficiency.

• Identify opportunities to standardize components, improve modularity, reduce unnecessary custom parts, and increase part reuse.

• Create and manage Engineering Change Orders, drawing redlines, deviation requests, and other engineering-release documentation.

• Participate in technical design reviews and ensure mechanical designs meet performance, safety, compliance, manufacturability, and serviceability requirements.

• Support prototype builds, pilot production, and first-article manufacturing activities.

• Provide engineering support during factory testing, product validation, and certification activities.

• Assist with technical documentation associated with thermal, dielectric, functional, and other product testing.

• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and mid-level mechanical engineers.

• Review engineering work for accuracy, manufacturability, documentation quality, and compliance with design standards.

• Partner with suppliers and fabricators on sheet-metal fabrication, machining, welding, finishing, painting, gasketing, and assembly requirements.

• Provide hands-on engineering support to manufacturing teams when design, fit-up, tolerance, or build issues arise.

• Participate in root-cause analysis and corrective-action activities related to manufacturing and quality issues.

• Support nonconformance review and material disposition activities when needed.

• Incorporate field feedback, service experience, and production lessons into future product improvements.

• Help develop and improve mechanical engineering standards, documentation practices, release processes, and design guidelines.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

• 7+ years of professional mechanical design experience within an engineered-to-order, industrial equipment, electrical infrastructure, or similar manufacturing environment.

• At least 1–2 years of direct mechanical design experience involving low-voltage switchgear, switchboards, or closely related electrical distribution equipment.

• Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks.

• Experience working with PDM, PLM, or comparable engineering document-control systems.

• Strong understanding of sheet-metal design and fabrication.

• Experience with machining, welding, structural design, mechanical assemblies, and tolerance control.

• Demonstrated experience releasing complete manufacturing documentation packages.

• Strong experience developing engineering drawings, BOMs, ECOs, and revision-controlled documentation.

• Ability to interpret complex mechanical drawings, blueprints, electrical layouts, and technical documentation.

• Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly principles.

• Experience supporting production teams and resolving manufacturing-related design challenges.

• Demonstrated ability to lead technical execution across multiple projects.

• Experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to other engineers.

• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and operations teams.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
• Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.

• Experience designing mission-critical power infrastructure or equipment used in data center environments.

• Background working with electrical equipment manufacturers, switchgear manufacturers, or contract manufacturing operations.

• Experience designing large-frame electrical equipment and multi-section assemblies.

• Familiarity with UL testing, witness testing, product certification, and supporting technical documentation.

• Working knowledge of standards applicable to low-voltage switchgear and switchboards, including UL 1066, UL 891, NEC, or comparable requirements.

• Experience supporting new-product development, product standardization, or major design-improvement initiatives.
WHAT WILL MAKE SOMEONE SUCCESSFUL
The strongest candidate will combine advanced mechanical design capability with a practical understanding of how engineered products are fabricated, assembled, tested, installed, and serviced.

This person should be comfortable taking ownership of technically complex designs while working closely with production teams, suppliers, and other engineering disciplines to solve real-world manufacturing challenges.

Success in this role will require strong technical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to balance performance, manufacturability, quality, cost, and schedule.

The ideal candidate will also be a collaborative technical leader who enjoys mentoring other engineers, improving engineering processes, and helping build scalable design standards for a growing organization.
