Overview:
This position leads all payroll-related functions for a large, multi-state employee base. The Payroll Manager will design and maintain efficient systems and controls to ensure employees are paid accurately and on time, while remaining compliant with federal and state tax requirements. This role requires a mix of operational expertise, systems knowledge, and team leadership to continually improve payroll processes and support business objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and execute payroll processing cycles (weekly, semi-monthly, and monthly) for employees across multiple states.
- Identify and implement process improvements and technology enhancements to increase accuracy and efficiency.
- Validate earnings, deductions, taxes, and benefits calculations to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Interpret and apply payroll, wage, and hour laws; serve as an internal advisor on compliance issues.
- Establish, document, and maintain payroll policies, ensuring internal controls protect data integrity.
- Lead and develop the payroll team through training, performance feedback, and workload management.
- Partner with HR to reconcile benefits data and support third-party benefit administration.
- Generate payroll and compensation reports to assist with audits, management analysis, and budgeting.
- Coordinate with accounting to resolve pay-related discrepancies and support month-end close.
- Handle confidential payroll information with discretion and professionalism.
- Maintain awareness of industry trends, technology, and best practices to continuously strengthen payroll operations.
Experience and Education:
- Minimum 10 years of direct payroll experience; hands-on management of in-house payroll required.
- At least 5 years of experience leading or supervising a payroll function.
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPP certification preferred.
- Familiarity with Ceridian Dayforce strongly preferred; UKG WFM knowledge a plus.
- Strong command of multi-state payroll regulations, wage and hour laws, and tax compliance.
- Advanced Excel skills with working knowledge of Word and PowerPoint.
- Ability to learn and apply Power BI tools for payroll analysis and reporting.
- Proven ability to manage sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; able to work effectively with leadership and cross-functional teams.
